Engineered, Laminate, Vinyl and Carpet are all sources of VOC
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are gases that are emitted into the air from products or processes. Some are harmful by themselves, including some that cause cancer. In addition, they can react with other gases and form other air pollutants after they are in the air.
Where do VOCs come from?
These compounds can be found inside and out, some sources continue to produce VOCs after they are in your home such as formaldehyde. In building materials, the sources will be; Paint, paint strippers varnishes and finishes, caulks and sealants, adhesives, engineered and pressed wood, carpet, laminate and vinyl.
The big problem is the that our flooring market is absolutely control by a very few multi-national NYSE listed companies that have invented an ingenious way to convince the public that fake is better than real. So, we cut down our timber ship it to China where it is turned into any number of single-use floor covers such as veneers for engineered wood and microfilm for the most dishonest product on t the market, ever…laminate. The fact is that our (United States) shift to single-use floor covers is the largest wealth grab since the housing crisis.
To be clear China is not the problem, the problem is us, the consumers that accept what is not logical. How about that China is the number #1 exporter of wood with just under one 33% going to the United States? No big deal right China sells us everything, but wait China is also #1 in imports which is a very interesting business model to say the least. So yes, we send our trees to Vietnam and China so we re-import (rimport, if you will) with no regulation regarding chemicals etc. Fantastic job lobbyist.
Engineered floors are just covers, we sell floors
Yes, you were right when you said “this does not make sense” as you were shopping for floors at box stores. The whole idea is that fake is better than real. Engineered wood handles moisture better? No-way not from mother nature or your washing machine.
Real wood is too expensive! Wow- over what time period, since ours last forever and the other maybe 5 years. Over the life of house that gets stupid expensive compared to us. And if you order from SYP Direct, we will beat any apples to apples price- please check us on that!
Warranty is a marketing term not a real promise
Lifetime warranty, really? Come on man, that just doesn’t seem reality based. Have you ever seen the terminology or terms of these documents? Absolutely worthless in the real world. Our warranty is that one day your floors will be the last thing of value left of the structure they are going into-and in most cases they will be salvaged and sold again.
“Its been a long time since I installed a real hardwood”; a long-time installer in SC on phone call recently. Problem is we are not shocked any longer because we hear things far worse all the time. The one's that admit is are great, the ones that try to talk you out it are at issue. Time is Money! Time is money and real wood takes time, a great deal more time. Acclimation, sand, stain and repeat takes longer than peeling of the back of a sticker.

Mill Run Heart Pine is our cheapest grade
Kiln dried, T&G, box ends with relief grooves on back for stability. Rustic aka Mill Run Heart Pine is 1 x 8 x 12 (3/4” x 6 7/8” x 12’) $2.50 -$2.25 sq. ft depending on volume below or above pallet size 1200 square feet. Not to be confused with Rustic Caribbean Heart Pine.
Cheapest Heart Pine yes, but the 50-80% heart content visible i.e on the face, is exactly like a #1 Heart Pine board. The Mill run grade is a collection of "almost" boards that have any number of tiny defects preventing them for being a true Heart Pine board. Cheapest floor is tricky thing to Google simply because the market now considers engineered and laminate as actual substitutes as real wood. They sell single use covers and we sell one time purchase floors.
Fill this with wood filler or saw dust + glue + sand to create one of the best looking knots you will ever see. Consider this an opportunity or cut it out, either way the Mill Run Heart Pines price make the time worth effort and you still have plenty of gorgeous character throughout your floor.
Knot on the edge of board will always get defected into tavern grade, not even #2 will have any of these. However, the knot is smooth and stable, fill those two pin knots and finish your floor.
Mill Run is scarce and therefore impossible to find, as a homeowner-unless you call SYP Direct.
Shipping & Waste Factor
We build crate walls and flip the top row over to protect your flooring during shipping. The tongues, grooves and all that good stuff stays nice and clean and for $50-75$ per pallet our customers get 100% coverage guarantee. Pallets will be banded & stapled. The walls are designed to protect from forklifts. Replacing boards that were damaged due to carrier mishandling is not a problem…the issue is that shipping a few replacement boards will have outrageous shipping fees. Since you are laying the floor yourself, you have skills :) Wanted to share what one of our customers used the crate walls for that came with her order.
When shippers act right, with 10% waste you will have plenty of extra boards. Our customers have made shelves, mantels, frames, etc. ...even chicken coops! The barn door below is a link to the Mercantile Antique Malls' Facebook page.
If shipping is not kind...& things do happen out there on the road...if your walls arrive destroyed - imagine what would have happened to the T&G. It is really the best insurance to make sure your floor arrives in the best condition possible.

Southern Yellow Pine Flooring Grades
We believe that pine should be sold like wine where it is all about age, species and location. Our Southern Yellow Pine floors all come from Northern Alabama Longleaf Pine, a species within the SYP term. Age and species create stability, density, color and character. Fast growing pine makes great building materials but it should not be compared to Longleaf Pine. Even though both are species inside Southern Yellow Pine and grow in the same states, for the most part, they are far from equals.
Pine grades are not pine flooring grades
Grades are subjective when it comes to knotty pine, which is not actually a flooring grade, but rather a dimensional lumber term indicating seconds. Not the case with a true flooring mill. At SYP Direct we buy timber to produce solid wood floors, walls and ceilings not 2 x 4's. Our #2 boards are not seconds or defects; they simply do not have enough heartwood to be called heart pine.

The letter in its entirety can be found by clicking the photo above or the button below. We wanted to print a portion of the letter which is dated 2015 and is one of many testimonials we consider extremely special.
"I will be quite honest, we were nervous after our first conversation with Jason simply because he seemed too good be to true! He was too easy to talk with and too easy to get a hold of by phone and he was too knowledgeable about his product and the quality and price were both too good, and even the logistics and delivery were going to be way too easy.We talked with Jason and we had our pastor call and talk with Jason, and we kept looking around for other suppliers and you know what we came to like Jason more and more."
"Let me tell you about a little snafu that occurred with the delivery because I think it gives a good idea of Jason's character. 'We contacted Jason about two weeks before we needed the flooring delivered, and we arranged for a specific delivery date. Well, the mill shipped the product early and the flooring was going to be delivered way too soon. We contacted Jason immediately and he assured us that he would take care of everything. Jason arranged for our flooring to be stored by the freight company, and we didn't do any work and we didn't pay a dime. On a scale of 1 to 10, we would give Jason and SYP Direct a 15."
The only thing that truly matters is our customers satisfaction. Organic growth, fueled by word of mouth and referrals depends on actually following the customer is always right philosophy, not just paying lip service. We have countless emails that tell Heather thank you for all her hard work during the shipping portion the transaction. On our contact page you will find some of these, while on Houzz SYP Direct- even more.
So if you are looking for a top of the line Knotty, New Heart, Antique or any type of pine flooring or siding - call us. Order with confidence knowing that we are working for you, not a contractor but the homeowner. We look forward to working with you on your project.

Pre-conditioning solid wood floors prevents "splotchy" finish
Believe it or not there are flooring "professionals" that do not want take the time to pre-condition or even sand your new solid floors before that throw some stain on those boards! Real wood takes time, time is money and flooring installers/finishers like money just as much as anyone else. So it is no wonder they all push engineered or laminate- to lick and stick down in one day, to be repeated in 5-7 years as well.
Now throw into the mix you did not buy the floor from the people installing and or finishing your boards. They are going to discover a quality of pine which they have never seen much less worked with...see where there might be an issue? The example above is much worse than these pictures make it seem, for complete story from homeowner click right here to read the final review.
Pre-conditioning should be used on any unfinished solid wood floor

Local Pine Flooring is Shipped Nationwide
We are so proud of all of our reviews! It was tough but we picked four of our favorites to share in this self promotional post concerning our amazing rating with Better Business Bureau and online reviews at Houzz.com. We consider ourselves a local company simply because the level of involvement we put into every sale. Shipping solid wood flooring nationwide is easier said than done. At the Houzz site you will see California and Hawaii both in the fall of 2018, Alaska was 2016- Montana is happening now (we do 2 year)-and so on.
The point? Southern Yellow Pine Direct has an A+ BBB rating. The rating is a direct result of being able to beat any local price combined with quality that is "too good to be true", as we were told by the St James Church (Stillwater OK) Elder in charge, make us the best local option in most places.
”Our flooring guy lowered the price to stain and finish when he saw the flooring un-crated"
Are we perfect? Absolutely not, but when mistakes are made we fix them unlike most that will find a way to blame and charge the customer. Lying about waste, lengths, grades can combine with damages during shipping to create a laundry list of ways you pay too much. The truth about what you are buying, in detail so that it is no secret the value, we call it sale by logic. The flooring industry is designed to confuse while SYP Direct puts education and transparency above all else.
It does not hurt that we have an unmatched inventory of pine mills: Louisiana Southern Yellow Pine, Alabama Longleaf Knotty and New Heart Pine,Old Growth Vertical Grain Pine, Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine and Caribbean Heart Pine.

Antiqued is not antique- the d is not silent.
Caribbean Heart Pine is an amazing way to make your friends jealous by creating a floor that looks like it cost as much as the house. Every single person that comes into your home will compliment the floor along with having no idea what type of pine they are admiring. This leaves some room for our customers to brag a little bit or just impress that one person in the family. For whatever reason, this is one "luxury" purchase that will pay off in the future. Perhaps one of the most desirable traits of Caribbean Heart Pine is that its natural beauty becomes more evident with time. As the wood ages, its patina emerges providing a palette of rich, vibrant colors ranging from yellows to vibrant reds and coppers that deepen and intensify with age.
Our rustic grade of Caribbean Pine has more of its heartwood derived from sap and thus has more color variations and those gorgeous knots. Prime (aka Select grade) is the choice for those that want elegance. Prime grade is virtually clear of any knots except the occasional small pin knots. Color is more consistent as is the grain patterns, with a high degree of red heartwood and limited sapwood. For those of you interested in creating age instantly or matching old heart pine, this is the species. It arrives with 85% heartwood and can be manipulated to look better than most reclaimed boards.
Antique or Antiqued Heart Pine?
The picture is a sample board of Reclaimed Heart Pine with one addition; as you can see their is a smaller board overlaying the samples. The Prime 7" and portions of the Rustic will contain a perfect match for this particular version of Antique Heart Pine, close enough to fool the installer! If you need to match a floor and do not want to spend a fortune, Caribbean Heart Pine is a great substitute for the much more expensive and shorter Antique Reclaimed version of our pine.
Wide Plank Clear Pine shipped to Montana
Below is the photo we received from our newest customer, Pioneer Log and Timber Homes of Victor Montana. A legendary builder from Big Sky Country, so much so that we can honestly say "we feel honored they are using our materials considering their reputation and resources".
We know we have the best flooring anybody's money can buy, we are pleased PLT Montana realized it when they received our samples. This is a company that only puts the very best materials in their lodges, we are a perfect match. Speaking of matching ,Wide Plank Clear (Prime) Southern Yellow Pine is not an off the shelf item- for most companies, we thrive on unique or hard to find.
The two quotes below are from Pioneers website (home page) which also includes instructions on how to use their website, try it, and the most amazing gallery this writer has ever seen. The reason Pioneer is a perfect match for SYP Direct; top of the line materials, each order ownership is involved, our Alabama Knotty and Heart Pine is milled to order which gives it continuity along with securing an easy fit during installation. And finally, our prefinished flooring, both custom and commercial, is made in the USA.
Of note, this is how we create wide plank prefinished heart pine as opposed to the normal 3 1/4 or 5" you see being offered everywhere in UV Aluminum Oxide...blah blah blah. We use your choice of oils, water based or unique finishes such as the Zero VOC Monocoat by Rubio. (visit Rubio color creator app on website)
The pictures below were sent to us by Pioneer in hopes that we could match the look of this existing floor. We get similar calls all the time but rarely does one catch our attention like this one did once we visited their site. Very impressive and even more they have that portfolio but are still down to earth and easy to work with. Rob and everyone we dealt with has been fantastic from the ordering process to the 1900 miles journey to MT. We urge you to visit their website if for nothing else than to see some an amazing portfolio, this is not your local log cabin builder- not even close.
About Shipping with SYP Direct
So what is our secret? How do we consistently ship flooring across the country without worrying about damages to the tongue and groove, for example? The answer is two-fold; one we explain the 10% waste factor so all customers understand and order it, two we pack our materials to ship, protecting the floor against the normal wear and tear of travel, plus the occasional bad fork lift driver.
OK, so maybe there is third reason having to do with the old school philosophy that the "customer is always right"- we have your back; we do everything we can do to make sure you are happy when all is said and done. Our job is not over until the floor is installed, find that anywhere else..no way. Call or email us today for a quote, a sample or to make a purchase- we look forward to working with you on your project.
Random widths versus repeating patterns
pricing random width knotty pine
The following is an explanation given to a customer along with a request for pricing 2200 square feet of Knotty Pine and 1000 square feet of Caribbean Heart Pine. Many times customers do not realize the difference in prices between random and repeating widths.
I wanted to get you some rough numbers to use- we want to be resource during the finish install. Along those lines, in my opinion random is much easier to install and in small rooms repeating pattern floors are dominated by the larger boards, the narrow ones are lost- repeating works best with two widths such as 5" and 7".
How to price repeating pattern flooring?
First of all, you need to know how many square feet you are ordering. So the formula we use to get close to final board number is to add all the face widths together then divide total square footage by that number to get the approximate number of boards. In a three width repeating 3 1/4, 5 1/8 and 6 7/8 heart pine it would be 15.125, so with 2000 square foot order you get 132.23 boards. (2000/15.125)
So armed with an approximate number of boards we find out the length of each board, in our case this very easy as we run 8', 10' or 12' and do not usually mix the lengths unless by request, you can request all 12' for example. This is when the lengths and face widths come into play..how much coverage per board is what we need.
3.13 sf on a 1 x 4 x 12' at 133 boards is 416 sf
5.125 sf on a 1 x 6 x 12' at 133 boards is 698 sf
7.13 sf on a 1 x 8 x 12' at 133 boards is 949 sf
So now you can simply multiply the square footage times price for each width and divide by the number of square feet.
