Some VOC are harmful by themselves without reactions, including some that cause cancer
To uncover the the truth about hypoallergenic flooring, we need to define the term. First the term then look at how it is used in the flooring market. Frankly, it is dangerous what you find when you search for hypoallergenic floors. There should be no laminate or LVT results in the search but there they are, one page one. In reality, hypoallergenic, used in advertising really has very little meaning in today’s global market.
Who decides what is hypoallergenic flooring?
There are no Federal standards or definitions that govern the use of the term “hypoallergenic.” The term means whatever a particular company wants it to mean, usually just enough for the industry. For example, cosmetics have a higher threshold than hypoallergenic flooring finishes; but remember it does not matter because there are no standards defining the term. If you have seen the movie ‘The Wolfe of Wall street’, this is fugazzi, smoke, vapor it does not exist.
Monocoat by Rubio
Rubio Monocoat uses a unique molecular bonding technology to adhere to the topmost fibers of the wood it is applied to. Within minutes this technology forms a durable finish that maintains the natural appearance and feel of the wood. Rubio Monocoat’s unique molecular bonding technology also allows for a one-coat finish. This means there is no need to continually apply oil or build up layers of polyurethane like with traditional finishes.
Hypo-allergenic Glue
Bostiks– Bostik’s Ultra Set “Single-Step2” is a high-performance adhesive with built in moisture control. Furthermore, a sound reduction membrane reduces unwanted noise. Using Bostiks helps maintain the long-term durability of your Green Floor. In fact, based on its polymer technology, allows for movement just like nails. Bostiks contains one percent recycled rubber and is a certified Zero VOC product along with the Green-guard stamp. Bostiks is the only adhesive SYP Direct recommends for gluing down solid wood.
Laminate and Carpet are the worst offenders
If you want hypo-allergenic and it must be carpet, keep it short! Heavy, high-pile shag carpets are not a good flooring choice as they hold on to all types of irritants. Despite vacuuming regularly, it is almost impossible to get down to all the tiny particles. Those of you with allergies know this all too well, but the industry wants to sell you this stuff..again and again. And forget about laminate, the salesperson will talk about how easy it is to clean- not how they make it.
LVT is petroleum based and laminate is toxic
Some forms of vinyl and laminate flooring are considered to be toxic, so no it is not a good choice for those seeking hypo-allergenic floors. This is because certain types can contain reprocessed plastic and other toxic chemicals including cadmium, toxic phthalates and lead. These flooring materials can give off toxic fumes that can impact air quality through a process called off-gassing.
FROM a recent customer: We decided on a natural tung oil finish with citrus solvent, as we wanted the least amount of chemical fumes in the house while expecting a newborn. It’s a light stain, but water resistant and darkens with the added layers, and so far, we really like it. So, if you’re searching for gorgeous, long-lasting flooring, with no for your next project, SYP Direct is your one stop shop. What you see is what you get. Not to mention, one of our favorites, added bonuses has been taking the wood planks used for shipping the flooring and making garden beds!

SYP Directs ‘mill to order’ Longleaf Southern Yellow Pine versus Clover Lea pine is no contest. To be clear, Clover Lea is produced using the scraps of pine lumber mills which explains the micro short boards.
Real Wood floors an investment that provides real returns, versus a single use floor such as laminate or engineered wood. Single-use floor covers, investment in your local floor covers and carpet store, but not your home.
Laminate is not wood, nor is it a floor. A photocopy of wood and a temporary floor cover, best define laminate. Laminate is made with synthetic materials or very thinly sliced pieces of wood.
Southern Yellow Pine durability should not be in question as one day it will be the only thing of value left of your home.
Engineered floors were invented to solve a specific problem and were never meant to replace carpet until it did.
