Clear Pine or Knotty Pine Flooring
Which is better pine flooring, clear or knotty?
"Sometimes you feel like a knot, some times you don't"
Does clear or knotty pine make a better floor?
The answer to which grade, #2 or C and Better, more commonly known as knotty and clear is all about taste. The look you want will determine the grade, in most cases. Clear or C and Better Southern Yellow Pine is consistent throughout; clear pine derives its look from the grain where the character of Knotty pine comes from knots and variation in grain.
Clear pine is sometimes called select or vertical grain if the board warrants. #2 Knotty Pine, Longleaf, will contain anywhere from 0-40% heart content visible (face) on each board. Both of these grades can be manipulated to fool consumers once they go into boxes. Caveat Emptor
Southern Yellow Pine Flooring Grades
We believe that pine should be sold like wine where it is all about age, species and location. Our Southern Yellow Pine floors all come from Northern Alabama Longleaf Pine, a species within the SYP term. Age and species create stability, density, color and character. Fast growing pine makes great building materials but it should not be compared to Longleaf Pine. Even though both are species inside Southern Yellow Pine and grow in the same states, for the most part, they are far from equals.
Pine grades are not pine flooring grades
Grades are subjective when it comes to knotty pine, which is not actually a flooring grade, but rather a dimensional lumber term indicating seconds. Not the case with a true flooring mill. At SYP Direct we buy timber to produce solid wood floors, walls and ceilings not 2 x 4's. Our #2 boards are not seconds or defects; they simply do not have enough heartwood to be called heart pine.
Wide Plank Clear Pine shipped to Montana
Below is the photo we received from our newest customer, Pioneer Log and Timber Homes of Victor Montana. A legendary builder from Big Sky Country, so much so that we can honestly say "we feel honored they are using our materials considering their reputation and resources".
We know we have the best flooring anybody's money can buy, we are pleased PLT Montana realized it when they received our samples. This is a company that only puts the very best materials in their lodges, we are a perfect match. Speaking of matching ,Wide Plank Clear (Prime) Southern Yellow Pine is not an off the shelf item- for most companies, we thrive on unique or hard to find.
The two quotes below are from Pioneers website (home page) which also includes instructions on how to use their website, try it, and the most amazing gallery this writer has ever seen. The reason Pioneer is a perfect match for SYP Direct; top of the line materials, each order ownership is involved, our Alabama Knotty and Heart Pine is milled to order which gives it continuity along with securing an easy fit during installation. And finally, our prefinished flooring, both custom and commercial, is made in the USA.
Of note, this is how we create wide plank prefinished heart pine as opposed to the normal 3 1/4 or 5" you see being offered everywhere in UV Aluminum Oxide...blah blah blah. We use your choice of oils, water based or unique finishes such as the Zero VOC Monocoat by Rubio. (visit Rubio color creator app on website)
The pictures below were sent to us by Pioneer in hopes that we could match the look of this existing floor. We get similar calls all the time but rarely does one catch our attention like this one did once we visited their site. Very impressive and even more they have that portfolio but are still down to earth and easy to work with. Rob and everyone we dealt with has been fantastic from the ordering process to the 1900 miles journey to MT. We urge you to visit their website if for nothing else than to see some an amazing portfolio, this is not your local log cabin builder- not even close.
About Shipping with SYP Direct
So what is our secret? How do we consistently ship flooring across the country without worrying about damages to the tongue and groove, for example? The answer is two-fold; one we explain the 10% waste factor so all customers understand and order it, two we pack our materials to ship, protecting the floor against the normal wear and tear of travel, plus the occasional bad fork lift driver.
OK, so maybe there is third reason having to do with the old school philosophy that the "customer is always right"- we have your back; we do everything we can do to make sure you are happy when all is said and done. Our job is not over until the floor is installed, find that anywhere else..no way. Call or email us today for a quote, a sample or to make a purchase- we look forward to working with you on your project.
Shiplap and V-groove more popular than ever.
The cool thing about walls and ceilings is that nobody walks on them, so the can be about style and profile (forgive the pun) than stability. You are really only limited by your imagination as you can change colors and species to create the perfect blend for your style. You may also remember the old term Car-siding or Bead board these are all used to describe 'profiles' or the way they fit together. Flooring normally uses a tongue and groove profile whereas a wall uses v-groove for example.
Can you use tongue and groove on ceilings?
The first question most people ask is about the grade, after they say something like "wow that is a bunch of pine". The answer is that you are looking at Knotty Pine our #2 grade but because so much was purchased they were able to put the highest heart content boards on the floor giving the impression they had two grades.

Caribbean Heart Pine is a secret
"Tell them it came from Thomas Jefferson's Boyhood Home, they will never know". One our favorite tongue in cheek comments we give to homeowners- but the idea of fooling their relatives appeals to some folks..No Doubt
These are some sample photos of our Caribbean heart pine flooring.Caribbean Heart Pine looks like you would think really old pine should look, but it is still new Heart Pine in that it is not reclaimed. This type of wood is prized throughout the world for its distinctive grain, rich, lustrous patina, and durable hardness.
The patina of finished Caribbean Heart Pine will deepen over time, but as you can see from our photos the unfinished version has great colors as well. The grades are not sorted based on heart content but rather or 'not the boards has knots'. The rustic grade will have more frequent knots and the sapwood will generally be within this grade.
A great "showroom" for Southern Yellow Pine Direct
If you are close to Knightdale NC and love all types of "Shabby Chic" style plus antiques, we urge you to visit the Mercantile. To see the virtual tour of the Mercantile using their timeline click right here.
The Mercantile Antique Showroom, which is an amazing network of shops located under one roof. The retailer is close to Durham NC in the towns of Knightsdale. We were able to supply around 4500 square feet of our 3/4 x 5 1/8 #2 and better Longleaf Southern Yellow Pine "knotty pine" , all 10' and 12' foot boards. The finish on site was done by Mike Firstbrook, Firstbrook Flooring.
Knotty Pine Barn Door
When you order 5 pallets of flooring, including 10% waste, you will invariably have a good deal of leftover whole and partial boards. The folks at the Mercantile had a great use for the excess in this really good example of "things made for leftovers" which also includes multiple bar tops, tables, shelves, trim, doors, and more than one chicken coup.
