Engineered, Laminate, Vinyl and Carpet are all sources of VOC
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are gases that are emitted into the air from products or processes. Some are harmful by themselves, including some that cause cancer. In addition, they can react with other gases and form other air pollutants after they are in the air.
Where do VOCs come from?
These compounds can be found inside and out, some sources continue to produce VOCs after they are in your home such as formaldehyde. In building materials, the sources will be; Paint, paint strippers varnishes and finishes, caulks and sealants, adhesives, engineered and pressed wood, carpet, laminate and vinyl.
The big problem is the that our flooring market is absolutely control by a very few multi-national NYSE listed companies that have invented an ingenious way to convince the public that fake is better than real. So, we cut down our timber ship it to China where it is turned into any number of single-use floor covers such as veneers for engineered wood and microfilm for the most dishonest product on t the market, ever…laminate. The fact is that our (United States) shift to single-use floor covers is the largest wealth grab since the housing crisis.

To be clear China is not the problem, the problem is us, the consumers that accept what is not logical. How about that China is the number #1 exporter of wood with just under one 33% going to the United States? No big deal right China sells us everything, but wait China is also #1 in imports which is a very interesting business model to say the least. So yes, we send our trees to Vietnam and China so we re-import (rimport, if you will) with no regulation regarding chemicals etc. Fantastic job lobbyist.
Southern Yellow Pine Flooring Grades
We believe that pine should be sold like wine where it is all about age, species and location. Our Southern Yellow Pine floors all come from Northern Alabama Longleaf Pine, a species within the SYP term. Age and species create stability, density, color and character. Fast growing pine makes great building materials but it should not be compared to Longleaf Pine. Even though both are species inside Southern Yellow Pine and grow in the same states, for the most part, they are far from equals.
Pine grades are not pine flooring grades
Grades are subjective when it comes to knotty pine, which is not actually a flooring grade, but rather a dimensional lumber term indicating seconds. Not the case with a true flooring mill. At SYP Direct we buy timber to produce solid wood floors, walls and ceilings not 2 x 4's. Our #2 boards are not seconds or defects; they simply do not have enough heartwood to be called heart pine.

Believe it or not there are flooring "professionals" that do not want take the time to pre-condition or even sand your new solid floors before that throw some stain on those boards! Real wood takes time, time is money and flooring installers/finishers like money just as much as anyone else. So it is no wonder they all push engineered or laminate- to lick and stick down in one day, to be repeated in 5-7 years as well.

Pre-conditioning pine flooring is vital, without preparing the wood you risk a splotchy and uneven finish. The variation in density throughout Knotty Pine is illustrated to our right. This is an example of what to expect in our #2 Knotty Pine-at 0-40% heartwood the variation can be dramatic. Pre-conditioning prepares the wood to accept stain in uniform manner, for an easy to understand definition.

The PDF attached has prices and specifications of our #2 Knotty Pine, #1 Alabama Heart Pine and our Natural aka Mill Run Heart Pine which is the only one our new pine grades where availability is limited to 1 x 8 x 12 only. It is essentially transcripts from emails sent by SYP Direct to a customer explaining our grades, pricing and shipping process. It also gives you a good idea the type of customer service, complete transparency and no stone un-turned.
#1 Heart Pine 50-80% Heart Content.These floors have the colors and sap bleed you expect from Heart Pine. These get some much better with age and do not require anything more than to be finished with clear poly, tongue oil (my favorite), or a light tint such as Wheat or Honey Oak.
#2 Grade #2 Knotty (Alabama Longleaf) Pine has 0-40% heart content per board. Kiln dried, T&G, box ends with relief grooves on the back for stability. 0-40% is # 2 or better grade with knots and color variations. These boards will have a variety of grain type, knots and colors. Some large knots and some tiny, some with sap bleed others just a pin prick. This is very unique floor. It can be stained dark or tinted lightly to give aged appearance.
