How can you find wide and long prefinished Heart Pine?
The answer is obvious if you noticed the alligator logo. Bayou Rustics is the only place you can find 12' boards in 7" widths prefinished just like the floors in Sanibel. The network Bayou Rustics uses allows customers to truly customize their floor without paying custom prices.

Mill Run Heart Pine is our cheapest grade
Kiln dried, T&G, box ends with relief grooves on back for stability. Rustic aka Mill Run Heart Pine is 1 x 8 x 12 (3/4” x 6 7/8” x 12’) $2.50 -$2.25 sq. ft depending on volume below or above pallet size 1200 square feet. Not to be confused with Rustic Caribbean Heart Pine.
Cheapest Heart Pine yes, but the 50-80% heart content visible i.e on the face, is exactly like a #1 Heart Pine board. The Mill run grade is a collection of "almost" boards that have any number of tiny defects preventing them for being a true Heart Pine board. Cheapest floor is tricky thing to Google simply because the market now considers engineered and laminate as actual substitutes as real wood. They sell single use covers and we sell one time purchase floors.
Fill this with wood filler or saw dust + glue + sand to create one of the best looking knots you will ever see. Consider this an opportunity or cut it out, either way the Mill Run Heart Pines price make the time worth effort and you still have plenty of gorgeous character throughout your floor.
Knot on the edge of board will always get defected into tavern grade, not even #2 will have any of these. However, the knot is smooth and stable, fill those two pin knots and finish your floor.
Mill Run is scarce and therefore impossible to find, as a homeowner-unless you call SYP Direct.
Shipping & Waste Factor
We build crate walls and flip the top row over to protect your flooring during shipping. The tongues, grooves and all that good stuff stays nice and clean and for $50-75$ per pallet our customers get 100% coverage guarantee. Pallets will be banded & stapled. The walls are designed to protect from forklifts. Replacing boards that were damaged due to carrier mishandling is not a problem…the issue is that shipping a few replacement boards will have outrageous shipping fees. Since you are laying the floor yourself, you have skills :) Wanted to share what one of our customers used the crate walls for that came with her order.
When shippers act right, with 10% waste you will have plenty of extra boards. Our customers have made shelves, mantels, frames, etc. ...even chicken coops! The barn door below is a link to the Mercantile Antique Malls' Facebook page.
If shipping is not kind...& things do happen out there on the road...if your walls arrive destroyed - imagine what would have happened to the T&G. It is really the best insurance to make sure your floor arrives in the best condition possible.

What is the best finish for pine?
What is the best way to finish pine floors?
The following is checklist informally go through with our callers to help decide what is best for using pine floors from SYP Direct, not pine in general. Remember we sell Alabama Longleaf Heart Pine, new Heart Pine or Character Knotty Pine with the colors of Heart Pine...this is not yellow or white.
So once these questions have been answered we can easily direct you to a product, or a product line. We love Monocoat from Rubio and Waterlox as both offer characteristics that are popular with our clients. For example, Monocoat is a plant based zero VOC easy to fix finish and Waterlox has amazing Tung Oils with resin compound that tints and protects.
The depends on a number of variables including but not limited to the traffic!
The first photo is from 'rave type' bar in Indianapolis, the SKY Bar 247 Indianapolis and those of you about to visit the Hoosier state capital, click the picture which is 1 x10 Knotty Pine with a dark finish. The next up with the reflection is Caribbean Heart Pine with a Gloss clear coat poly, no kidding that all.

Caribbean Heart Pine is a secret
"Tell them it came from Thomas Jefferson's Boyhood Home, they will never know". One our favorite tongue in cheek comments we give to homeowners- but the idea of fooling their relatives appeals to some folks..No Doubt
These are some sample photos of our Caribbean heart pine flooring.Caribbean Heart Pine looks like you would think really old pine should look, but it is still new Heart Pine in that it is not reclaimed. This type of wood is prized throughout the world for its distinctive grain, rich, lustrous patina, and durable hardness.
The patina of finished Caribbean Heart Pine will deepen over time, but as you can see from our photos the unfinished version has great colors as well. The grades are not sorted based on heart content but rather or 'not the boards has knots'. The rustic grade will have more frequent knots and the sapwood will generally be within this grade.
SYP Direct client photos 2016 wide plank clear finished heart pine
SYP Direct sells four types of new heart pine; Caribbean rustic 85% and up heart wood, Caribbean prime with same 85% and up just void of knots (pin size if any), Alabama #1 grade 60-90% heartwood, and our Character grade Alabama 50% heartwood (available in 1 x 8 x 12' only). Each one of these has different look which can be seen even with untrained eye in the colors, grain and richness of character. This post is about customers using clear finishes on our heart pine flooring, if you are interested in finding out more give us a call or shoot over contact from bottom on post.
New Jersey is local for SYP Direct Floors
Brian is our latest Do it Yourself client from the New Jersey and he did an amazing job installing and finishing our new Heart Pine. He like most callers from your area had to be convinced that we were not "too good to be true". Like most of the callers from your area, you have two representations of pine, antique reclaimed or White Pine.
New Heart Pine can be found locally in two ways; one is by paying a fortune the other is SYP Direct. Delivering mill to job site mandates that we beat everyone local in quality and price, most of the time we do both.
New Jersey loves real wood and our Southern Yellow Pine
The only time I have a problem dealing with New Jersey or New York inquiries is when they believe that White Pine is the same as Alabama Longleaf Pine. Unless you have experience using either mature new pine or old growth Southern Yellow Pine, held it it is hard to comprehend the degree of difference regarding weight, density, character, grain, color and mill work.
Both founders of our company grew up in Louisiana and the similarities are really easy to find between the styles of the two states and cities. Charleston is the oldest city in South Carolina and New Orleans is certainly the oldest in Louisiana! Its historical charm dates back to 1670, the year it was founded. This quaint city offers attractions as old as America itself. The city was at the forefront of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. While it is a historical city for the United States, Charleston offers more than a history of military presence it overs a look back in time. The city blends Southern U.S. charm with cultures that have become a part of the city since its establishment centuries ago. click to follow Historical Charm of Charleston
Charleston history is perfect for new heart pine
The crazy thing about our popularity in Charleston and the rest of SC, it began with White Oak. Character grade or #1 and #2 common mix. We sold the White Oak longer, wider and cheaper than anyone in that area. Those in-roads led us into the South Carolina restoration market using our Caribbean and new Heart Pine as substitutes for more expensive antique floors. Your secret is safe with us.

Pine should be sold like wine- age and location matter
We specialize in # 2 Knotty Longleaf Southern Yellow Pine, Alabama New Heart pine and Caribbean Heart Pine, but we offer the best quality flooring at, what most consider to be crazy low prices. And most importantly, we keep it simple. Our grades are based heart content, 0-40%, 50-80% and 85% plus.
When we saying purchasing raw materials is important, it is not marketing strategy, it matters. We were able create a partnership with the finest flooring mill in Alabama. A pure flooring mill, specializing in tongue and groove flooring, not a lumber yard where most of the time, flooring is very secondary to the much more profitable, based on size alone, construction materials industry. 2 x 4 stuff for those of you wondering what that really means; that fact can be important when you consider things such as relief grooves which are essential to the longevity of solid floors, and certainly important with southern pine.
Grades and heart content, most people just want their floor to look good! Well, of course, but why pay more based on a term created to identify the best or worst of, essentially the same board. Loblolly pine select? Longleaf select pine is called Heart Pine and is easily distinguishable with color, density and growth rings. I assume select knotty pine is knotty pine without knots? Of course not, the point is that that term was created to increase the price and should be taken with a grain of salt. A grade should identifiable, by a layman, from the lesser grade without using your imagination or a finishing technique.
In the construction materials or dimensional lumber market the grades are standardized and regulated, as much as the industry itself will allow. Which means that the big guys want to keep the standards very high, make sense? Think of is this way, in the 2 x 4 market the grades can be discussed and sold based on industry standards and guidelines and this gets a little murky with regards to flooring.
The grades are very specific and monitored within the industry. Those grades do not translate to the long-leaf flooring business, not when heart pine enters the equation. In the solid pine flooring market you have a wide range of companies producing and or re-milling flooring, which means you have a wide variety of marketing terms. For more on our opinion, or questions concerning a specific grading questions, please send us an email, or give us a call.
It begins with what should be obvious, a house only needs one floor and never a floor cover or single use leased floor.
Our mission is to be the source and voice for any homeowner or end user that wants solid wood flooring - an actual floor that will last longer than the house….not a cover.
Today our timber is more valuable shipped to places like China and then back the United States in the tiny slivers known as floor coverings. A real wood is real not engineered and it will never end up in a landfill which is exactly where every floor cover will end up someday.
We been sold the idea real solid wood brings problems so great that homeowners should sacrifice and make this investment every seven years buying covers instead of floors. Engineered floor is the new carpet and will ultimately, like carpet fill the landfills of the United States.
We put the type of pine down that will out live your home and literally be reclaimed one day then sold to someone else. Investment flooring is what we call our approach and One house, one floor our motto.
Antique versus Antique Heart Pine
Antiqued is not Antique, the d really does matter! Antiqued is a finish style not an age description, which can be confusing if you are not aware of that small difference. Know your source if you go with Antique flooring.
As for our buying Heart Pine "antiquing" it, that is where our former customers come in, as they have sent us pictures of every kind of age creation you can imagine. We have also spent a great deal of time in house learning tricks we pass on as you prepare for finish and installation.
Know your source, see the materials, and understand the provenance. Provenance- From Webster’s Dictionary; origin or area of origin. Above is one of our favorite all time customer floors. Jen E in CT put this amazing look wide plank Caribbean Heart Pine floor together using 4 colors and custom edging. It looks like it came from a pirate ship when you see it up close- So much character and color variations- Gorgeous!
If you have questions about a source, give us a call and we can guide you through buying locally or find you something better, but wherever you buy we keep them honest.
