The best advice we can give to keep it simple. Buy the floors below and a clear coat is all you need, anything else would be a crime. So If you are a DIY and want to know the best way to finish unfinished flooring, we have some advice.
"Put some lipstick on that pig" is a truly southern phrase we use to explain how the prefinished pine flooring market works. If you see a dark stain, assume a lower grade. You will see dark stained "heart pine" in box stores and online, but be forewarned it is not heart pine, not the way we measure it. If you are buying heart pine you are want to see the floor, right? They are putting lipstick on a pig! 
The prime grade Caribbean Heart Pine needs no lipstick just a clear coat of your choice, Tung or Teak Oil either pure or tinted.

With floor covers such as engineered and laminate you are really just leasing the floors, and like a car lease you will pay more on the backside than you ever expected! These floor covers are filling our landfills now and in the next 4-5 years the amount is expected to double from current levels of 300,000,000 lb. per year! All so they can generate repeat business. What if every home built from this day forward used 1” solid real wood from a local mill or trusted source? Do you believe that to be more harmful (aka less green) than our current model, which is built on shipping timber to China so they can cut it up, compress it and sell it back to us in slivers. Kiln dried, T&G, box ends with relief grooves on back for stability. Rustic aka Mill Run Heart Pine is 1 x 8 x 12 (3/4” x 6 7/8” x 12’) $2.50 -$2.25 sq. ft depending on volume below or above pallet size 1200 square feet. Not to be confused with Rustic Caribbean Heart Pine.
Cheapest Heart Pine yes, but the 50-80% heart content visible i.e on the face, is exactly like a #1 Heart Pine board. The Mill run grade is a collection of "almost" boards that have any number of tiny defects preventing them for being a true Heart Pine board. Cheapest floor is tricky thing to Google simply because the market now considers engineered and laminate as actual substitutes as real wood. They sell single use covers and we sell one time purchase floors. 
Fill this with wood filler or saw dust + glue + sand to create one of the best looking knots you will ever see. Consider this an opportunity or cut it out, either way the Mill Run Heart Pines price make the time worth effort and you still have plenty of gorgeous character throughout your floor. 
Knot on the edge of board will always get defected into tavern grade, not even #2 will have any of these. However, the knot is smooth and stable, fill those two pin knots and finish your floor. Mill Run is scarce and therefore impossible to find, as a homeowner-unless you call SYP Direct.
Shipping & Waste Factor
We build crate walls and flip the top row over to protect your flooring during shipping. The tongues, grooves and all that good stuff stays nice and clean and for $50-75$ per pallet our customers get 100% coverage guarantee. Pallets will be banded & stapled. The walls are designed to protect from forklifts. Replacing boards that were damaged due to carrier mishandling is not a problem…the issue is that shipping a few replacement boards will have outrageous shipping fees. Since you are laying the floor yourself, you have skills :) Wanted to share what one of our customers used the crate walls for that came with her order.
When shippers act right, with 10% waste you will have plenty of extra boards. Our customers have made shelves, mantels, frames, etc. ...even chicken coops! We believe that pine should be sold like wine where it is all about age, species and location. Our Southern Yellow Pine floors all come from Northern Alabama Longleaf Pine, a species within the SYP term. Age and species create stability, density, color and character. Fast growing pine makes great building materials but it should not be compared to Longleaf Pine. Even though both are species inside Southern Yellow Pine and grow in the same states, for the most part, they are far from equals.
Pine grades are not pine flooring grades
Grades are subjective when it comes to knotty pine, which is not actually a flooring grade, but rather a dimensional lumber term indicating seconds. Not the case with a true flooring mill. At SYP Direct we buy timber to produce solid wood floors, walls and ceilings not 2 x 4's. Our #2 boards are not seconds or defects; they simply do not have enough heartwood to be called heart pine.
Random widths versus repeating patternspricing random width knotty pine
The following is an explanation given to a customer along with a request for pricing 2200 square feet of Knotty Pine and 1000 square feet of Caribbean Heart Pine. Many times customers do not realize the difference in prices between random and repeating widths.
I wanted to get you some rough numbers to use- we want to be resource during the finish install. Along those lines, in my opinion random is much easier to install and in small rooms repeating pattern floors are dominated by the larger boards, the narrow ones are lost- repeating works best with two widths such as 5" and 7". How to price repeating pattern flooring?
First of all, you need to know how many square feet you are ordering. So the formula we use to get close to final board number is to add all the face widths together then divide total square footage by that number to get the approximate number of boards. In a three width repeating 3 1/4, 5 1/8 and 6 7/8 heart pine it would be 15.125, so with 2000 square foot order you get 132.23 boards. (2000/15.125)
So armed with an approximate number of boards we find out the length of each board, in our case this very easy as we run 8', 10' or 12' and do not usually mix the lengths unless by request, you can request all 12' for example. This is when the lengths and face widths come into play..how much coverage per board is what we need. 3.13 sf on a 1 x 4 x 12' at 133 boards is 416 sf 5.125 sf on a 1 x 6 x 12' at 133 boards is 698 sf 7.13 sf on a 1 x 8 x 12' at 133 boards is 949 sf So now you can simply multiply the square footage times price for each width and divide by the number of square feet. Pricing Southern Yellow Pine The PDF attached has prices and specifications of our #2 Knotty Pine, #1 Alabama Heart Pine and our Natural aka Mill Run Heart Pine which is the only one our new pine grades where availability is limited to 1 x 8 x 12 only. It is essentially transcripts from emails sent by SYP Direct to a customer explaining our grades, pricing and shipping process. It also gives you a good idea the type of customer service, complete transparency and no stone un-turned. #1 Heart Pine 50-80% Heart Content.These floors have the colors and sap bleed you expect from Heart Pine. These get some much better with age and do not require anything more than to be finished with clear poly, tongue oil (my favorite), or a light tint such as Wheat or Honey Oak. #2 Grade #2 Knotty (Alabama Longleaf) Pine has 0-40% heart content per board. Kiln dried, T&G, box ends with relief grooves on the back for stability. 0-40% is # 2 or better grade with knots and color variations. These boards will have a variety of grain type, knots and colors. Some large knots and some tiny, some with sap bleed others just a pin prick. This is very unique floor. It can be stained dark or tinted lightly to give aged appearance. |
