Antiqued is not antique- the d is not silent.
Caribbean Heart Pine is an amazing way to make your friends jealous by creating a floor that looks like it cost as much as the house. Every single person that comes into your home will compliment the floor along with having no idea what type of pine they are admiring. This leaves some room for our customers to brag a little bit or just impress that one person in the family. For whatever reason, this is one "luxury" purchase that will pay off in the future. Perhaps one of the most desirable traits of Caribbean Heart Pine is that its natural beauty becomes more evident with time. As the wood ages, its patina emerges providing a palette of rich, vibrant colors ranging from yellows to vibrant reds and coppers that deepen and intensify with age.
Our rustic grade of Caribbean Pine has more of its heartwood derived from sap and thus has more color variations and those gorgeous knots. Prime (aka Select grade) is the choice for those that want elegance. Prime grade is virtually clear of any knots except the occasional small pin knots. Color is more consistent as is the grain patterns, with a high degree of red heartwood and limited sapwood. For those of you interested in creating age instantly or matching old heart pine, this is the species. It arrives with 85% heartwood and can be manipulated to look better than most reclaimed boards.
Antique or Antiqued Heart Pine?
The picture is a sample board of Reclaimed Heart Pine with one addition; as you can see their is a smaller board overlaying the samples. The Prime 7" and portions of the Rustic will contain a perfect match for this particular version of Antique Heart Pine, close enough to fool the installer! If you need to match a floor and do not want to spend a fortune, Caribbean Heart Pine is a great substitute for the much more expensive and shorter Antique Reclaimed version of our pine.
Antiqued is a finish type, antique indicates age
A past blog of ours entitled Caveat’ Emptor (buyer beware), was not a big fan of Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine, as it is sold today. The blog simply pointed out some things that might confuse the buyer, mostly marketing terminology or catch phrases created to improve the provenance. For example, Tennessee Whiskey barn is much cooler than Arkansas chicken farm, or vice versa, no offense to either state.
Where do you buy Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine?
From a value or investment approach, the only Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine worth the money is small batch, just like bourbon. They best floors are "not something we have all the time" and you will hear that from some, but raw materials must change at some point unless the structure was infinite.
Or you can give the illusion of age using any one a variety of antiqued finishes, notice the d, which means it is new finished to look old. Using this approach, the value is found with a forever floor that will last a lifetime getting better looking every year. And if that is not enough- tell everyone you want to make jealous it came from.
From Whom should you buy? If you want our opinion check out the Bayou Rustics Page or contact directly for available Antique Reclaimed Heart Pine from a trusted source.
Antique versus Antique Heart Pine
Antiqued is not Antique, the d really does matter! Antiqued is a finish style not an age description, which can be confusing if you are not aware of that small difference. Know your source if you go with Antique flooring.
As for our buying Heart Pine "antiquing" it, that is where our former customers come in, as they have sent us pictures of every kind of age creation you can imagine. We have also spent a great deal of time in house learning tricks we pass on as you prepare for finish and installation.
Know your source, see the materials, and understand the provenance. Provenance- From Webster’s Dictionary; origin or area of origin. Above is one of our favorite all time customer floors. Jen E in CT put this amazing look wide plank Caribbean Heart Pine floor together using 4 colors and custom edging. It looks like it came from a pirate ship when you see it up close- So much character and color variations- Gorgeous!
